The City of McAllen has kick started a citywide campaign to promote green business and green living. The city of about 130,000 has received numerous recognitions for its composting and recycling programs; and now is taking a pro-active approach with its citizens and businesses. McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez used his 2010 State of the City speech to discuss some of the new programs and marketing efforts to encourage a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality recognize McAllen as a city that implemented a successful composting program. The city has worked with local businesses and manufacturers to maintain this cost effective program.
TCEQ awarded McAllen the Texas Environmental Excellence Award in 2008.
