Mike Allen, former president of McAllen EDC and leader for the City of McAllen, passed away Wednesday evening. He was a true visionary and always fought to create jobs and grow the City of McAllen.
Services for Mr. Allen are as follows:
A rosary is set for Friday, Aug. 27 at noon at Sacred Heart Parish in McAllen and a funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Mission. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Building Fund.

According to the MetroMonitor released by the Brookings Institute, McAllen, like many other Texas cities, has made the Top 20 list for Recession-Proof Cities.
A researcher at the Institute said this of the cities: “Most of these cities have some general characteristics in common,” said Howard Weil, author of the report and a fellow at the Metropolitan Policy Program. “They didn’t experience huge housing bubbles followed by a crash, and their economies weren’t rooted in the auto industry.”
Despite the global economic recession, McAllen did not suffer from extensive job loss and the McAllen EDC currently is working with about 25 projects and already have committed several companies this year in McAllen and Reynosa, MX.

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers NBA Development League and sole affiliate with the Houston Rockets will compete for the league championship. The best of three game series will begin Monday in Tulsa. The series comes back to the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday at State Farm Arena.
The Vipers is the first NBA D-League team in the McAllen MSA and packs the 6,000-seat arena whenever they are in town. The Vipers is a hybrid model of D-League teams as it trains and sends players directly to the Houston Rockets. Notable Rockets players such as Yao Ming and Aaron Brooks have visited the McAllen area and the Rockets played the Boston Celtics during the pre-season in McAllen.

The Brookings Insitute recently identified McAllen, TX as the only U.S. metro to surpass pre-recession peak employment. The Metro Monitor for fourth quater 2009 indicates that percent for employment gain increased by 7-percent in McAllen.
Despite job loss, foreclosures and plant closures, McAllen has remained a strong, sustainable market. Retail continues to grow with recent opening of the area’s first Wienerschnitzel, new bars and restaurants on 17th Street in Historic Downtown McAllen and a new hotel near the convention center.
